Richmond castle: (North Yorkshire) ~ A Norman fortress, built by William the Conqueror in his quest to quell the rebellious North. William's close ally, Alan of Brittany, chose the site for his principle castle and residence. The 11th century remains of the curtain wall and domestic buildings are combined with the 100 foot high keep with its hugely thick walls, added in the 12th century. There are magnificent views over the River Swale from the keep and there is a riverside walk to Easby Abbey.
Open times: 1st April - 1st November 10am - 6pm."
