York Minster, seat of the Archbishops of York, is one of the finest examples of medieval church architecture to be found anywhere in the world. York, strategically placed to command the natural South-North route from London to Scotland, again became a major powerbase in both the secular and ecclesiastical affairs of the nation. Work on the present edifice of York Minster - which stands at 534ft (160m) long, with towers 197ft (60m) high - was started in 1220 but so ambitious was the project that it was not finally completed until 1480.
