Aldborough Roman Town, nr York: (North Yorkshire) ~ This was the principal town of the Brigantes, whose earlier tribal stronghold can be seen at Stanwick. The remains include parts of the Roman defences and two spectacular mosaic pavements. The on-site museum displays local Roman finds.

Directions: ~ If travelling from York on the A59 turn right on to the B6265 at Green Hammerton and follow the road all the way to Aldborough (about 7 miles from Green Hammerton). Turn right into Aldborough village and proceed straight on down the hill keeping the maypole and Church on your right. The road corners to the left towards the bottom of the hill passing the dairy and Post Office. About 100 yards further on there is a junction with monument on right. Turn left and Aldborough Manor is on your left. Drive through the arch where you will find parking.

If coming via the A1(M) motorway leave it at Junction 48 sign posted Boroughbridge and the A6055. Follow the signs to Boroughbridge but keep a sharp look out for the sign post to Aldborough and Green Hammerton which is just off the roundabout on the eastern side of the motorway. Proceed on this road for around half a mile until the crossroads (cemetery on left). Go straight across and you will find yourself in the village of Aldborough. (Follow directions as above).
